The owner of Déménagement Myette says necessity was the driver behind him starting his unique moving company on August 21, 2008. "I had just moved to Montreal and I needed a job quickly," recalls Julien Myette. "Since I was very athletic, I decided to work for a traditional moving company, while looking for something better." For several months, Julien was able to closely observe the ins and outs of the industry. He then began to think.
When he saw the nearly empty trucks loaded with two or three pieces of furniture, Julien thought the use of space and fuel could be streamlined in a radical way. As a cycling enthusiast, he thought of using bicycle trailers to move furniture for short trips. He first tested his service in the summer of 2008 through classified ad sites. More than once he was faced with a look of incomprehension and surprise when customers saw him arrive on two wheels.
"At first, I would voluntarily choose not to specify which means of transport we would use. Since our prices were unbeatable, we had a lot of calls," says Julien. "It was funny to see the reaction of customers, and even though some of them flatly refused to let us move them, most gave us a chance and were extremely satisfied with the service."
