Meet the owner

In an era of e-readers and chain book stores, Toronto’s Type Books remains devoted to the printed word and fiercely independent.

“The thing about an independent bookstore, it is basically a reflection of its community and neighbourhood,” says Joanne Saul, co-owner of Type Books.

The neighbourhood in question is Forest Hill Village, a wealthy enclave of retail outlets with a small-town feel. Type Books has been a presence in the Village since late 2006. It was launched roughly one year after Joanne and her partner, Samara Walbohm, opened the first Type Books on Queen Street West, which still thrives in the downtown location.

Local spots to pick up adult colouring books in Toronto

Local spots to pick up adult colouring books in Toronto

Type Books is an adult candyland for the contemporary book lover, and here you’ll find a whole section dedicated to adult colouring books. Hot items include the purse and backpack-sized The Little Book of Coloring for Calm: 100 Mandalas for Relaxation in Minutes (perfect for shading away on the subway or in a coffee shop) and the Vive le Color! series (think: India, Japan, butterflies – all the good stuff). For all you Benedict Cumberbatch fans, keep your eyes peeled for the official Sherlock colouring book, The Mind Palace.

It’s best to enter here with an open mind because you definitely won’t get the typical bookstore experience. The first major attraction is the window display, which recently featured the first ever Type Book Awards (all picks made according to staff preferences). Second, the store loves to celebrate local authors on a regular basis. And, it caters separately to different age groups, promoting story time for the wee ones and launching events for older readers.

There are two basic ways to approach book-buying: Go in knowing exactly what you want, or chat up other book lovers to suss out new titles. At this Queen West bookstore you can easily do both. The knowledgeable staff can help with expert recommendations and personal reviews of current and classic titles. You’re bound to strike up conversations with fellow shoppers browsing the narrow aisles. Tip: Carve out a few hours for your visit.
