When storeowners Jesar Gabino, Matt George and Zeb Munir opened Nomad in 2005 they already had two boutiques in their portfolio: streetwear store Ransom and the sneaker boutique Goodfoot (both now closed). The stores were part of the game-changing retail collective United Front, housed at 431 Richmond Street that included Stussy Toronto.
Nomad was top of the heap. The shop introduced a new menswear aesthetic to the local market. Since day one, they carried the brands Common Projects, Wings+Horns and A.P.C., now household names in menswear. “We weren’t super young at that point,” says Jesar. “We were in our late 20s, early 30s—our tastes had refined a lot.”
Before the Internet was as content rich as it is today, Gabino says the storefront was elemental in their clients’ discovery of new brands. When 431 Richmond sold, the owners were drawn to West Queen West—its proximity to other independent menswear boutiques made the neighbourhood a destination. While customers may be more informed about what’s on the market these days, Nomad consistently has something new to offer.
“You can always come in here and expect something a little bit different,” says Jesar. Every season is a new opportunity to showcase the best of contemporary menswear and Nomad delivers. “Where we stand out is the selection,” he says. “And we really pay attention to our customers.”
The decided cool guy in town, Nomad has done tons collaborations with celebs (including a recent with Justin Bieber). Their 416 and 431 graphic long-sleeve tee collab with Been Trill went viral when Kanye West wore it at his Toronto concert in 2013. Shop Yeezy’s Crepe boot in taupe, paired with Comme Des Garcons Play emblem tee (which rapper French Montana is seen toting in one of Drake’s Instagrams). They also carry a range of sweet sneakers including grey and black Nike Sock Dart and suede New Balance 580’s collaboration with wings + horns.
Look good even when you sweat. Nomad is the place to shop for minimalist menswear by top-notch designers. While their focus is on streetwear, they've also got some crisp options for the gym. YEEZY Season 1, Robert Geller, and Wings + Horns sweatpants are among a few of their luxurious athlete-appropriate wear. You can also find Nike Sportswear sneakers, Carhartt Work in Progress plain t-shirts, Phillip Lim oversized, asymmetrical hemmed shirts and Raf Simmons' tasteful graphic tees.
Known for their next-level collection of urban-facing menswear, this Queen West boutique is a perfect stop for the hat-wearer in need. A combination of brand name caps and trendy basics (white sports mesh and black leather, for example) and unique selections from the likes of the Carhartt Work in Progress line (think camouflage and subdued tropical prints) unite to create a multifaceted selection of baseball caps for the discerning locavore.
