“When a new client comes in, I approach them the same way a nurse does,” says Core Body Science Pilates and Body Studio owner Kelly Dolson. “This means I do an objective and subjective assessment of their posture, gait, medical conditions and aliments, listen closely to their story, observe their physique, do an evaluation and decide on a ‘plan,’ as we say in the medical world.”
Kelly takes this approach for good reason; she is a registered nurse and has been one since 1987. Throughout the decades of working in the operating room, intensive care unit and in telemedicine, she was also a personal trainer, as well as a group fitness and spin instructor. “On top of my nursing, I taught 20 to 25 hours a week in a number of gyms,” she recalls.
With such a unique skill set, Kelly’s Pilates studio is more than just one you’ll visit simply to fulfill a fleeting New Year’s resolution. She runs individual and small group classes on Pilates Reformer machines, which require the kind of commitment that leads to results. Rehab is a huge part of what goes on in Kelly’s studio. “People come to me because they have complex issues that they know I can deal with,” she says. “I believe people appreciate the fact that we pay attention to the inside and the out.”
