Engineers have done amazing things: invent the wheel, harness fire and, of course, create amazing new ways and methods of roasting coffee beans. Ex-engineers Phil Robertson and Sebastian Sztabzyb harnessed their love of coffee by creating a different way of roasting the drink, just for their own satisfaction.
“We apply a very scientific, engineered process to roasting coffee,” Phil says. “For those reasons, we’ve been able to carve a niche for ourselves in the coffee industry.”
But Phil & Sebastian aren't interested in becoming retail giants in the market place. They just want to supply great artisan coffee to like-minded coffee lovers around the world. They have four locations in Calgary and a café in the works, and you can also find their excellent coffee in major cities across North America.
Originally located at the Calgary Farmers’ Market, this local coffee roaster has since expanded to five locations throughout Calgary. Started by two University of Calgary engineering students in 2007, the popularity of Phil & Sebastian cafés has exploded. Like Rosso Coffee Roasters (see above), they offer coffee bean subscriptions.
The Marda Loop location of this blossoming local coffee chain is a favourite laptop-and-java haunt. Pick up a bag of the house-brand beans on your way out and keep that coffee-house buzz alive at the home and office.
