Spa massage decoder: which type will cure what ails you?

Swedish

Easily the best introduction to massage, this type uses long, smooth motions and a degree of pressure that is right for you—with oil or lotion aiding in how the hands glide across your skin.

Hot Stone

Warm, smooth stones are placed on various alignment points to heat and loosen muscles. The stones are also used to gently massage the muscles. This is a great option if you don't like a lot of pressure.

Deep tissue

A deep tissue massage gets to the base of your muscles and loosens them with targeted, heavy pressure. You'll likely feel sore for a day or two after, but if you have chronic problems, the benefits far outweigh that.

Shiatsu

With tie-ins to acupuncture points, Shiatsu focuses on relieving muscle tension, improving body wellness, and restoring order to bodily function and organs by using rhythmic finger pressure at respective points along the entire body.

Thai

Using many of the same techniques as Shiatsu, Thai massage also incorporates stretching and movement to loosen tight and sore muscles. One very noticeable difference is that it's conducted on a mat on the floor—rather than on a traditional massage table.

Aromatherapy

Adding in the powerful sense of smell, aromatherapy uses scented oils that trigger different reactions in the body. Eucalyptus, spearmint, and lavender are all common to this type of massage.

Prenatal

Obviously intended for mothers-to-be, a prenatal massage caters specifically to the needs of a pregnant body. Designed to improve sleep, reduce body stress, and improve the effects of swelling, this is a great way to relax a body that's working hard.
