Easy tips on how to make a moveable greenhouse

October 9, 2015

Just because you live in a country that’s chilly most of the year, it doesn’t mean you can’t grow young plants. All you need is a greenhouse and advice on how to build one. These steps will help you on your way.

Easy tips on how to make a moveable greenhouse

Greenhouse basics

A greenhouse, also known as a glasshouse or hothouse, is mostly made of transparent materials like glass where plants that need regulated climatic conditions to grow.
You can pick up a snazzy pre-fab greenhouse at a garden centre but you’ll pay a pretty penny for it. Fortunately, it's easy to make your own portable shelter for young plants.

Greenhouse materials

All you need to buy is some clear plastic sheeting, four 45-centimetre lengths of rebar (steel reinforcing rods used for concrete) and some concrete-reinforcing mesh.

The mesh looks like wire fencing, typically comes in1.5-metre widths in rolls or panels, and is available from hardware stores and lumberyards.

Building instructions

  • To cover a garden bed that's1.2 metres wide, cut the mesh to a1.8-metre length with wire snips or a pair of bolt cutters.
  • Bend the mesh into an arch form, then anchor it at each corner over the bed by driving the rebar pieces through the mesh like tent stakes, using a hammer or small sledge. Now dig a trench10 to 13 centimetres deep along one side of the resulting tunnel, lay one edge of the plastic sheet in this trench, cover it with soil and anchor it further with rocks.
  • Pull the plastic over the archway and anchor it at the ends and on the other long side with rocks, bricks or a piece of lumber.
  • Use clothespins to gather the loose plastic and keep it from flapping in the wind.
  • This simple shelter will protect seedlings from cool breezes, keeping the temperature inside several degrees warmer on frosty nights. This will make it sturdy enough to resist a snowfall.
  • Always open up the plastic during sunny days or the plants inside will get too hot. When the danger of frost is past, put away the structure or move it to cover some newer seedlings.

Easy home-built greenhouse

You won’t have to take out a second mortgage to have a greenhouse to get your seedlings going. Being portable, you can move your greenhouse from place to place to cover the pats of your yard that are most in need. Follow these easy steps for an effective structure and, with care, you young plant will thrive.
