Though the word “culture” once had a far narrower usage, today it can designate any number of groups – not limited to ethnicity and nationality. Edmonton is an incredibly diverse place with all sorts of residents and visitors, which lends itself to the many cultural events on the calendar this month. Here are nine such celebrations you can't miss this August. [Photo credit: CariWest]

9 cultural celebrations in Edmonton this August

Animethon

Japanese graphic culture has had a stranglehold on mainstream entertainment for almost a generation – and given the prolific creative output of those working in the genre, that’s a good thing. Approximately 10,000 fans are expected to converge at MacEwan University August 11 to 13 for Edmonton’s tribute to Japanese animation with scores of videos, gaming, anime showings, video gaming, live entertainment, socials and panel discussions about the nerdy medium that’s become a millennial favourite.

Poundmaker’s Lodge Pow Wow

Aboriginals and non-aboriginals alike are invited to check out this annual Pow Wow in the Sturgeon County-based Poundmaker’s Lodge Healing Centre August 12 to 13 to take in a variety of activities, including intricate hoop dancing, crafts, food and other attractions.

Ukrainian Day

Considering some groups take a few days to celebrate their culture, why is it that Ukrainians only have August 13 marked on the calendar? Ukrainians might chalk it up to the notion that their work ethic only permits a 24-hour period for revelry. That’s why August 13 at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village qualifies as a must-see day trip east of the city.

CariWest

Inspired by Toronto’s Caribana festival – which demonstrated that a Caribbean cultural event could be pulled off in Canada – Edmonton’s nod to all that’s great about Tropic of Cancer culture has become one of the city’s more colourful festivals after more than 30 years. But the energy of the parade event running August 13 to 15 isn't all that's on the docket – catch a ton of live entertainment at Churchill Square and at a number of clubs after hours.

Bison Festival

At one time, herds of buffalo easily outnumbered their human counterparts. But after large numbers of the animal were hunted, extinction loomed. Being such a important part of Alberta's history means the festival scheduled August 19 at Elk Island is well in order – with an itinerary of music and dance along with complete culinary demonstrations of buffalo preparation prior to it hitting your plate. Dig in!

More fun things to do this August in Edmonton:

Edmonton Latin Festival

Granted, Latinos only comprise about two per cent of Edmonton’s population, but what they lack in numbers, they more than make up for in energy. Churchill Square is ground zero for all the fun August 19 to 20 when fans of everything Latin converge for two days of rumbas, salsas, mambos and more. Alright, everyone, cha-cha-cha!

Edmonton Blues Festival

There’s something ironic about getting rid of the blues by going to a festival dedicated to the… uh, blues. Don’t expect much philosophy such as the aforementioned at this three-day music outing, August 25 to 27 at Hawrelak Park, which marks the return of the always-popular Fabulous Thunderbirds, plus legendary stalwarts like Billy Boy Arnold, Canadian legend Colin Linden and local favourites Boogie Patrol.

Noisefest

Say what you will about noise artists – they can’t hear you. However small and underground the noise subculture in Edmonton may be, it’s a boisterous lot and will be making its presence known at this cacophonous occasion August 26 at the Ortona Armoury. Roughly 20 acts are slated to create some sonic frenzy at the festival.

Symphony Under The Sky

This four-night extravaganza starting August 31 featuring the Edmonton Symphony at Hawrelak Park is usually one of the biggest draws in the city. Take  in the resonance of an outdoor ensemble within view of a spectacular river valley with evenings dedicated to Hollywood classic soundtracks, the music of Nat King Cole and works by Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Bruch.

Whether you’re out celebrating the heritage of Edmonton’s people or those little things that escape the attention of most folks, enjoy the entertainment tapestry of what our city has to offer this month.
