Went here several times a month with family throughout the 80s & early 90s. A lot of great memories and got goosebumps when I walked in the doors nearly 20 years later. Same decor, same great food & service, and Sinatra is still the music of choice. The cheese manicotti is even better than I remember and I can't believe I went without a Troc Salad for so long. Delicious & fresh tossed in the same homemade vinaigrette. And the meatballs? Simply awesome. It's a trip back in time for sure. I can't tell you how happy I am that I have rediscovered this Hamilton landmark. And that after 70 years the same high standards still hold up. Only open weekends and closed in the summer starting in July I think. If you're on the fence, just go you won't regret it. Read more

I have been a huge fan of Tonys for years. Been going to the location on Dundas for ages and this place is so classic Italian its such a London landmark. The portions are huge and I always order the large panzerotti just so I can take some home, awesome the next day. The pizza's here are ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE, and delivery is quick. The cheese they use is delicious, and so is the sauce. I would not recommend the party-size, or queen-sized pizza's to anyone unless they are feeding a family of small horses. This place is one of my favourite places in all of Hamilton to go - I usually only go on special occasions as I revere the food and pastas that much and would never want to spoil the pleasure in which I have each outing I go. I boldly say that of my seven years in Hamilton that this is the best italian restaurant in the city. My favourite dish is the Chicken Parmigiana - the meal always feels like it was cooked right then and there and the quality is unreal, it just is perfectly cooked just a notch past al dente pasta with a delicious red sauce and a great serving of chicken cutlets. The servers are always top notch and so respectful and always take good care of things. To work there I would definately have some pride in my work, just outstanding place in all. Read more

Don't let the outside fool you - this is one of those gems you find hidden away in the least likely location. We tried Papa's based on Restrauntica reviews - same reason we went with the deluxe panzerotti. You have to taste (and see!) this to believe it! I ate this thing for dinner, for lunch the next day, and AGAIN the day after that! Loaded with stuff like pepperoni, bacon, peppers and mushrooms - all wrapped up in a delicious, slightly chewy dough. It's about the size of a medium pizza - and large enough to share. Another delicious meal at Umberto's last night, with great service, a quiet table, and an unpretentious atmosphere. A side note, but important, they hit just the right note with the background music. Smooth jazz at just enough volume to enjoy. It was fairly quiet for a Thursday night, but the other half dozen or so tables were also filled with diners expressing their appreciation for a good meal. Beef carpaccio was, like all the dishes, the perfect size portion. My husband and I shared it well as the bruschetta, which was a little too cheesy for me but perfect for him. The chef salad is a great mix of greens and veg with a nice vinaigrette. The ostrich and kangaroo - what can I say - grilled/sauteed just beautifully and mouthwateringly delicious. The Shiraz reduction was a very nice accompaniment to the kangaroo. Both entrees were served with roasted veg and potatoes, nicely seasoned, as well as a charming little fresh vegetable relish/slaw on radicchio. Shared a bottle of 2009 Rosemount Cab Shiraz, chosen from the small but interesting wine list, proved a good choice. We lingered over tiramisu and flourless chocolate hazelnut cake, preferring the tiramisu. The "Umberto" specialty coffee was a lovely finish to the meal. Ingredients were fresh, attention was paid to presentation, and the service was very attentive yet not intrusive. We will definitely be back. (I will try the seafood pasta next time - 3 of the table of 6 near us ordered it as their favorite) Read more
