When you’re hungry, your stomach knows no clock — it wants what it wants, when it wants it (and it usually wants it NOW). When a bag of chips from the gas station simply won’t cut it, you need to seek out spots that serve full meals long after the sun goes down. These places all keep the kitchen open late.
Looking for a spot that serves food and is open till 2 a.m. on a Monday night? Look no further than The Buckingham — they’re open till 2 a.m. every night of the week. The menu is full of vegetarian and vegan options, which is rare for a pub. They do have some meaty dishes as well but their non-meat meals are where they really shine. They also serve up vegan corn dogs, courtesy of the Sailin’ On food truck.
The restaurant portion of this bakery and restaurant is open late, meaning you can order some excellent Chinese dishes way past your regular bedtime. They serve up dishes such as lemon chicken, ginger beef, sweet and sour pork chops and egg foo young. They also have a ton of rice and noodle dishes that will fill your belly and satisfy your hunger. The menu is huge, so you’ll never want for choice.
Casual, fun food that is consistently excellent is what you’ll find at Joey Tomatoes Kitchen on Jasper Avenue. It’s a great place to stop in for a few drinks and a late night snack or meal after an event downtown. The menu ranges from Asian-inspired appetizers to burgers and plenty of seafood dishes, including sushi. There are eight different steak options on the menu, plus ribs, rice bowls and plenty of pasta dishes.
Cactus Club Café pretty much has the full package — fun atmosphere, fantastic cocktails and a diverse but never overwhelming menu. Their appetizers are as good as their main courses, and the desserts are up to par, as well. They even manage to make their salads taste spectacular and hearty, without piling on unhealthy ingredients. Their perfectly cooked steaks will always hit the spot, as will the sweet potato fries. The hardest part is usually narrowing down all your choices to just one or two items.
The atmosphere is fantastic and the food is mostly traditional Scottish fare. If you’re feeling creative, make your own cheese and charcuterie platter by choosing from their extensive lists. You can sample appetizers, such as a mixed olives bowl or bruschetta. Or, you can go for the full-meal deal and try a hearty steak and mushroom pie or traditional chicken pie. They also serve up lamb shank, haggis and roasted lamb sausage pasta, among other fantastic dishes.
They take pub food to a new level here, by adding some exotic twists to classic dishes. Tired of regular wings? Try their Adobo buffalo duck wings. Other fantastic dishes include homemade pretzel bites, wild mushroom ceviche, naan duck confit, pulled pork nachos, pan-seared scallops with Asian slaw, and poutine au canard. For something really filling, try the Berlin bratwurst platter, which comes with cured bratwurst sausage bites made in-house and spicy mustard sauerkraut.
Enjoying a freshly made, brick oven baked, thin crust gourmet pizza late at night at a pub? Unheard of until now. But Beer Revolution constructs their pizzas using high-quality ingredients, including San Marzano tomatoes. If you’re not up for pizza, they have a huge menu, including some big, messy, delicious burgers. Be sure to order a side of fries, which come with the most amazing truffle aioli I’ve ever had.
