Came by during the Ribfest weekend to avoid the nonsense of Ribfest, were seated @ a dirty table which was cleaned after drinks arrived, drinks were fine, beers were cold, white wine spritzer was good. I think our server was having a long day as she wasn't happy or servile however dinner did manage to arrive and was slightly above average. Not sure if I will be rushing back. cheers
The soup was incredible - Definately one of the best I've had. Having eaten in a lot of upscale restaurants I was surprised to find a soup of this quality at the Poacher. The Fish and Chips was very good - the fish was not overly battered and didn't have a breading quality to it. Very nice, lighty and delicious. The guinness washed it all down very nicely.
Food was decent, service was HORRIBLE!! Took forever to get drinks & food ordered! Then we were ASKED TO LEAVE because a 15 month old boy at out table was 'making too much noise'! He WASN'T crying, or carrying on in any sense of the word, he was chatting & happily playing by himself in his mothers lap!! I COULDN'T believe they asked us to leave!! I could have understood someone saying "He's getting a little loud, is there anything we can do to help keep him occupied so he doesn't disturb the other diners" but no, we got a very cold "He's too loud & its making people take their drinks outside, he'll have to leave!" I don't know what was up with that lady but man-o-man! That is NOT how you treat paying customers (who USED to go there often)! Not to mention, people were probably taking their drinks outside because it was 25+ degrees outside at 8pm on a beautiful night!!! (July 1st, 2008). Anyway, I just want to warn everyone who's thinking of eating here NOT to bring their children along as you'll be asked to leave!!
The food was fantastic! Our friends are regulars at this gem of a pub, we had heard about their extensive Scotch selection and decided to take a look for ourselves. We sat at the bar as it was pretty busy (on a Wednesday night!)and we didn't feel like waiting for a table. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable, they really do have a great line up of whiskys! Great all round vibe in this place, we'll be back when the weather is warmer....want to spend some time on that great deck :)
Excellent English pub food with a great atmosphere. One of the best pieces of fish & chips and the pie was perfect. The price was also very reasonable.
We went there Friday night around 9ish. I realize it is a pub on a friday night, but that doesn't mean that you have to put up with bad service. We waited 30 minutes to get a beer, another 20 minutes for our order to get put in, another 40 minutes for a beer and nachos, 20 min to get a bill and we just left the change because we couldn't be bothered to wait any longer. By the time we all left we were thirsty and starving. Never again
Truly a delight. When in doubt and you want a consistent good quality hamburger go to the Poacher! The beef patty is REAL without cereal filling and a generous portion. The hamburger is topped off with cheddar cheese, bacon, red onion, lettuce and pickle. Tomatos on the side. Served generously with a mountain of golden fries (garden salad for the calorie consious). The server was outstanding and attentive. Food was delivered piping hot and in short order. If you enjoy a pub atmosphere the Poacher is a gem in downtown Burlington.
Most pubs I visit serve fairly generic food--really not bad but not particularly good either. The Poacher's food however is truly great--top-class stuff. It's a downtown gem.
My husband and I have been here many times, and never have been disappointed. My husband had the beer and the Steak and Kidney pie, and I had the coke and Chicken Club with Brie. I have had this sandwich on many occasions, although I have had many other items from their menu. Infact I highly recommend it to anyone. My husband really enjoyed his pie. No complaints what so ever, only praise.
By reviewing it, we all risk exposing jsut how good the poacher is. The curry fries are the best anyway. The Poacher is a fantastic pub, good food, good vibe. It's been getting too crowded lately (you used ot be able to find a seat on any day at any time of night - no longer!) but it still is one of the best pubs in Ontario.
The Poacher burger is a mythically wonderful creation that has been a solid part of the Burlington food scene for years. Good food does not need to be complicated. Take the right ingredients and cook them properly. It's that simple. For years I have wondered what makes this thing so delicious and so filling. Some suspect brick dust, but the patty appears to be completely free of any kind of filler. This burger is not for the faint of heart or the cholesterol conscious but it is a massive feat of culinary engineering. The pea to carrot ratio with the hot specials is always bang on. It's like a Tuscan summer palette of perfectly blended greens and oranges giving a vivid Van Gogh like presentation.
Probably my favorite pub in Ontario. Very authentic atmosphere upstairs, even has Darts and packets of crisps (chips) behind the counter! Food is AMAZING, very good fries, fantastic curry and sauces, hummus and pita is VERY cheap but best i've had in years. Server's could be a LITTLE bit friendlier. Every time I go, they seem to be the same.
Great pub food. Excellent homemade pies and British style curries. We go on a regular basis.
Best hot poppers in Town, gravy nice and thick, burgers very tasty. Servers need improvement, but listing as a 10 since Laura isn't to bright!
Of the many places that serve 'pub fare' this one has it down to an art - the soups are homemade - nothing out of a jar the prices are very reasonable, and their draft selection has some nice suprises - rare these days. An absolute gem
