The common narrative when it comes to the physical book and the shops that sell them is that interest in the paper form is waning, losing the battle to the dominance of digital devices. That mainstream train of thought didn’t deter Kim Koch and Rod Clarke, both veteran booksellers of many years, from opening The Paper Hound on the edge of Vancouver’s Gastown. And, somewhat to their surprise, it’s been younger customers and the so-called digital natives who comprise much of their regular clientele.
“To be honest with you, we weren’t really expecting that young people would be interested in the literature or in physical books we stock, but we see a real appetite among our younger clientele to read the classics on paper,” notes Kim. “I’m not sure if it’s a desire for the nostalgia of the printed format or simply the experience tied to those writings in particular.”
For the book-lovin' mommas, why not support local this Mother's Day and find that perfect new paperback for her book club at The Paper Hound. Located Downtown Vancouver, this charming brick-and-mortar bookstore has shelves stocked with used, rare and new books.
This small, well-organized shop is centrally located and includes both new and used books. It offers so much more than that though, making it a great place to explore with new discoveries every time you go in. They offer a touch of nostalgia with stacks of old postcards, back issues of magazines, maps and playbills.
The Paper Hound is a cute and quirky bookshop carrying a mix of new and used. The interior is nicely decorated and – if you pay close attention – you’ll notice that they have a working poetry vending machine just inside the door. Visitors can buy a surprise poem for less than $1, and you might even win a free poetry book. The staff here also deserve a shout out for their customer service: if there’s a book you want that they don’t have, they will order it for you and call you promptly when it’s ready for pick up.
