Going from selling oilfield equipment to owning a bookstore seems like a bit of a stretch, but it was always Darrell Prins’ dream. Between sales calls he would often find time to poke around the shelves of his favourite bookstore, The Bookseller, hardly imagining at the time that he would one day own it all.
Then, in 2006, his brother — a bookstore owner in Ontario, coincidentally — called and told him it was up for sale. “I thought, you know, I want to get out of this oilfield racket, so I bought it,” Darrell says. “The oilfield is much more lucrative, but money isn’t everything, as you find out.”
Looking for rare or out-of-print books? The Bookseller, located on Whyte Avenue, has a large selection of used scholarly texts and non-fiction, and an extensive religion category, including biblical theology, religious studies, Catholica and church history. You can search and purchase books from the Bookseller online.
With an inventory of about 30,000 books, there are plenty of exciting new titles to discover at The Bookseller. The owner has put about one-third of his inventory for sale online, but still finds that people like to visit the store in person. The high shelves and cozy chairs mean you can curl up with a book or two and no one will disturb you.
It focuses on rare and out-of-print titles that are nearly impossible to find in other stores, as well as books on Christianity and theology. Their neat and spacious store makes it easy to get lost for hours browsing their shelves.
