With the wild Canadian Rockies only a short drive west of Calgary, the opportunities for a day-trip adventure are virtually endless. However, for those wishing to stay a little closer to the city, check out these venues guaranteed to bring out the adrenaline junkie in all of us.
Year-round, Canada Olympic Park (site of the 1988 Winter Olympics) is located just 15 minutes from downtown. Wild winter activities include Alpine and Nordic ski and snowboard hill and facilities — including a full snowboarding terrain park with halfpipe. Also ride the luge track or a professionally piloted bobsleigh ride. Summer activities include a mountain bike park, zipline, summer bobsleigh, climbing wall and Eurobungy.
Get yourself schooled in adventure! The University of Calgary Outdoor Centre will set your pulse racing with its 13-metre indoor rock climbing wall and ever-changing bouldering area. This climbing facility has something for every age and level of ability.
If you don’t mind heading a little out of the city and westward towards the mountains, you'll find year-round opportunities that'll make your adrenaline surge. Choose your own adventure at the Canadian Rockies Adventure Centre in Canmore. The centre offers whitewater rafting excursions, ziplines, ice walks, cave tours and many more regional activities.
Indoor trampoline parks are all the rage. Extreme Air Park features a vast array of interconnected trampolines. Participate in group activities such as 3D dodgeball, zero-gravity basketball and also hop into the Foam Zone. This wild workout is a bouncy blast for your whole group.
Adrenaline junkies will agree that nothing tops the rush you get from jumping out of an airplane with only a parachute strapped to your back. Whether it’s your first jump or your 50th, Skydive Big Sky has everything you need for a fun jump. First-time divers will complete a ground school session followed by a heart-pounding 40-second freefall tandem jump from a six- or 10-passenger aircraft. If jumping isn’t quite your thing, Skydive Big Sky will set you up as co-pilot on a Piper Navajo plane — watch your friends jump, and be part of the flight crew.
