The city seems to have as many bakeries opening as coffee shops and Italian restaurants. How to choose where to go? After a lot of taste-testing and consideration, here are my picks for top 5 bakeries in Toronto below:
Don’t let the fact of a few steps below ground deter you. This mecca (pictured above) for sweet tooths and bread devotees offers exquisite Italian treats made with natural ingredients and organic flours. Sourdoughs, Focaccias, Amaretto Cookies and Biscotti are all so good, you should get at least two of everything. They also have fresh juices, salads and sandwiches, for those wishing for a healthy meal to go. Win-win.
The place might be a wee little thing, but the sheer talent going on in here is massive. It’s no wonder shops around town are using their breads to make their sandwiches and serve alongside soups and stews. Their sourdoughs are epic. I once ate half a baguette on the way home from their shop. I’d never done that before in my life, but couldn’t help myself. This place is busy and sells out often, so be sure to go early and/or as much as you can. It’s one of the few things you’ll get out of bed early for.
This 43-year-old family business is famous for Helen, the sunny, generous daughter who runs the place, and their Cinnamon Buns. The cinnamon buns are the size and weight of a Buick, so superior to those commercial ones, and they’re made with all natural ingredients. And though you think you’ll eat just half, you probably can’t help but finish it in one fell swoop. All items are made in-house with only fresh ingredients, no preservatives or additives, so go ahead and get a bunch of cookies, cakes, loaves, spanakopita and well, as much as you can carry out of there.
Mary MacLeod has been making handmade, small batch shortbread for 34 years. The little slip of a place on Queen at River on the east side, is always filled with the aroma of fresh baked cookies. In case you thought shortbread was a small, boring category, the wide variety of flavours here include Traditional, Butterscotch, Chocolate Crunch, Cranberry Almond, Dutch Chocolate, Espresso Chocolate, Hazelnut Chocolate, Maple Crunch, Mint Chocolate, Orange Chocolate, Rolled Coconut, and Whole Wheat Walnut.
