Not many cafés can claim to have been founded in a farmer's field – Red Door Provisions, however, is a different story. After being raised in the rolling green Gatineau hills just north of Ottawa, Lauren Power studied food therapy in Montreal, diving deep into holistic cooking and the pursuit of health and wellness through organic and locally grown whole foods. Yet it was while earning her degree in cooking that she stumbled upon a course in market fresh cuisine and tapped into what would become her deep-rooted passion. "This course was about how to develop relationships with farmers, how to cook seasonally and how to avoid the industrial chain of commercial food," she says. "I got into preserving as a hobby because of it and then I moved back home to do an internship on a vegetable farm."
It was on said farm that Lauren's career truly began, taking home all the extra produce that wasn't sold and preserving it so none of it went to waste. With a pantry overflowing with products, Lauren began selling her sweet and savoury seasonal treats to friends, family and small shops. She says, "That's when it started to take over all my time and I thought, maybe I could make a go of this!"
We focus on simple things, and do them really well. Seasonally driven, small batch, high quality food and drink that brings you back day after day. Our menu changes regularly - here's a glimpse.

This little neighbourhood cafe in the Beechwood Village is entirely out of the ordinary. It’s cheerful and bright, and the walls are lined with shelves filled with beautiful jars of exotic jams and preserves with names like Gingered Pear and Vanilla Bean Jam and Clementine Anise Marmalade. You can park yourself at a table with your laptop and enjoy a Pilot coffee shot or a steaming cup of tea poured from a red teapot and served with a scone and jam.
View this Smart ListA new addition to Ottawa’s Beechwood Village, Red Door Provisions is a preservation kitchen and café with a lot of spunk. Owner Lauren Power brings her culinary prowess and passion for local food and preserves to the table in this family-friendly community destination. Her variation on summertime coffee? The classic Italian affogato. For the sweet tooth on the hunt for a satisfying blast of rocket fuel, add one scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream, pour a foamy espresso shot over it, and you’ll be humming happily for the rest of the day.
